evolo 2015 Competition : Tree of Life

Issues

The demography of the third age group is rapidly increasing as the life expectancy of an individual has increased throughout the years. By the year of 2021, the population of the third age group will reach more than 7.1% of the total population according to Malaysia's Statistics Department. This shows that designs for the third age group is inevitable in the future as more elderly are going to use the built environment. This also indicate that the working population by then would have to bear the increasing number of third age population as the dependency ratio of the third age is expected to double from 7.4 to 16.6. In order to help the elderly live independently, provision of elderly friendly design for the third age group is a necessity.

Concept & Idea

The design is intended to promote the lifestyle of walking and hiking among the third age group. This instill challenges for the elderly group so they have new goals in their life.

This skyscraper designed with ramps throughout the entire building instead of staircases as the mode of vertical transportation. This promotes the active lifestyle for the elderly group which indirectly encourage them to have the will to travel higher by foot. The stronger the will the more luxurious the accommodation would be. This is a push for an active and healthy lifestyle.

It has also the capability to expand higher up in the future for residence expansion. This provide the flexibility for the ownership to grow from time to time. The entire building including the ground level (known as the new skin of earth) will be car free, a way to reduce the CO2 gas emission and to also promote a car free society. The reason of it being called as a "New Skin" was to let out a message than the pedestrian walk ways can be spreaded out as one singular platform that links all the buildings together and elevated from the levels for vehicles.

With a very natural and organic form, the skyscraper was arranged in a twisting motion and a tree like structure at the end of the building it helps to maximize view while allowing ramp/bridge linkage from this primary building to the secondary building. As commercial sections are merged into the residential area, it eases the hustle of travelling into a distance for grocery by vehicle when it is nearer and you'll only need to walk in a short distance.
