Biography:

“Be an architect that holds a surgical knife rather than a hacksaw” is a philosophy that I have adopted and constantly used as reminder ever since I was exposed to an innovative Japanese architect by the name of Takaharu Tezuka. It excites me to truly understand the idea behind that philosophy. To me, little things that we see daily should be known as the “bigger picture”, the lifestyle that we put up as being human naturally, and that itself shapes the beauty of architecture (the life we put in forms the space and not to forget, the ambience).

I grew up loving creative arts and interesting building forms. At a young age, I was pampered with Lego toys, building “cities and skyscrapers” in my living room instead of playing with video games. The lego toys are pretty much my childhood companion. My parents played a big role in motivating and encouraging me to let my imagination grow in whatever I do, be it drawings, be it problem solving. Little did I know that I was already in this architectural field at a young age. Architecture was my father’s dream when he was at my age. Due to the harsh economy at the time, he was forced to focus on his work for the family’s sake. Today, I am proud to say that my father and I are sharing the dream and I am very fortunate.  A supportive elder brother that I have is also working in the construction industry, constantly inviting me to join him in the construction site. Seeing the blood and sweat that both of us are putting into whatever we are doing, we always talk about how we are going to strive together in the future.

Ever since I got into the school of Architecture, the legendary utopian, Le Corbusier has been an inspiration to me. For the love and passion he had in shaping the world for a better future triggered me to think beyond the boundaries down the road. A firm belief I had in the message Le Corb preaches in his prime as he and the other pioneers telling the world that an evolution in architecture is needed from time to time. “Form follows function” a principle used by the modernists. I have to agree that this principle is truly important in terms of coming out with a practically perfect design but I do think that there are more than just functions that the forms should follow. A form can sometimes be expressed unconventionally and sometimes it follows the essence of the concept. My definition of a concept for the building is like telling its character, a charm given to be alive. It’s more than just a building when you can tell stories about buildings with concept.

As I was still on going with my course in Bachelor of Science(Hons) Architecture, I have learned so much from friends and my fellow lecturers. I was very grateful to be able to talk to them about point of view in architecture during spared time. “Passion is the drive to sustain yourself in this path” said one of my passionate lecturer. I have joined two local competitions with a team of coursemates during our studies and fortunate to be awarded for the both of them (Shalini Green Wall Exhibition and Tetra Pak Design For Good Competition). The two competitions have their impacts on my knowledge about designing, somehow relating to business and how to win hearts through great ideas. All in all, I have grown intellectually as a person through the experience in architecture course of “soul searching”.

Ever since I completed with my degree in architecture, I have been constantly getting myself involved in many international competitions (MattersBetter MH17 Memorial, eVolo Skycrapper Design, 120Hours, etc.). As for the 120hours competition, my team and I were very grateful to make it into the top 23 out of 741 submissions. Although, we did not win, but each and every step that we took is one step closer to the future. As architects of the future, we, the younger generations should be prepared and ready for what society is about to experience. During my spare time, I have created a blog to showcase my works with the help of an Information Technology majored friend. We have designed an interface where we can share the works I have done, so feedback can come internationally from the world.

Through the exposure of Japanese architecture, I have learnt how innovative Japanese architects can be in keeping not only their tradition but also the importance of a balance between buildings and nature. One of the environmental awareness I adopted from Japanese architecture is the traditional idea of how the outside world and the interior spaces can be designed as one compound.

I believe in an endless evolution in architecture, just like how we have evolved as human beings.

I have faith in watching the world evolve from era to era through researching and studying the history of architecture. In the era of Modernism, buildings are served as machines; we are now living comfortably in the world of technology and sustainability. It has grafted so much into the lifestyle of the people living within and yet there are so much more to be explored and to be introduced to the world. To me, architecture is shown through the beauty of the living, especially when it is able to strike a balance with nature. Sustainability in architecture is known as the balance of humans and nature, but to my opinion, how long can we last when we are the ones to destroy. In the course of my career, I am willingly to dedicate my life to architecture and to find a real sustainable way of living. With that, it triggers the question to the world for how architecture should be introduced to human once again.
